The historic Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site in Menard County is set to undergo a substantial facelift with an $8 million funding boost announced by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and the Illinois Capital Development Board (CDB), according to the State of Illinois . The funds, part of Governor JB Pritzker's bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital plan, will target refurbishments to the log village buildings and enhancements to the outdoor theater.

"We are grateful for Governor Pritzker's ongoing commitment to preserving New Salem and other state historic sites for future generations," IDNR Director Natalie Phelps Finnie said in a statement released by the Illinois government's website . Visitors of varying interests, from school children on field trips to history buffs attending candlelight walks, stand to benefit from these site improvements, finances permitting. APrior augmentations under the Pritzker administration approached the $3 million mark, covering a range of updates from the visitor center to access bridges on the grounds.

Last year alone, the historic site drew an audience of 374,418, serving as a significant attraction for the region. The sought-after October candlelight walk is noted for ushering in the autumnal ambiance among locals and visitors alike. The enhancements aim to sustain and perhaps increase visitation by assuring continued accessibility and enjoyment of the venue's historical and educational offerings, as per the State of Illinois .
