An Illinois man's routine errand to purchase a soda for his wife unexpectedly turned him into a millionaire when he decided to buy a scratch-off lottery ticket from a local Shell gas station. The winning $1 million ticket, which was part of the new "Bucks" series from the Illinois Lottery, was purchased at 2474 N. Thatcher Ave. in River Grove, as reported by NBC Chicago .

Dubbed "Fateful 56" by himself, the winner chose the nickname not only because of his age but also due to the winning number on the ticket coincidentally matching it, his surprise lined with an additional layer of serendipity when a friend replied to his good fortune with an image of his motorcycle sporting the same number 56, the news of this unexpected twist came from an anecdote shared by the lottery winner during an interview noted by FOX 32 Chicago . The series of scratch-off tickets, which includes games ranging from $1 to $20 with prizes up to $2 million, is a recent launch by the state lottery and has been a prolific source of winners this year, with over 23 million winning tickets and $610 million in awarded prizes.

"When I scratched the ticket at home and realized I’d won a million dollars, I was in total shock— but my wife was even more stunned," the man told NBC Chicago . "She didn’t believe me at all! I had to scan the ticket on my app to prove it, and even then, she still thought I was playing a prank on her." Meanwhile, the gas station that sold the winning ticket is set to receive a $10,000 seller's bonus.
