(WIFR) - With the start of tax season on Jan. 27, the Illinois Department of Revenue says the state will participate in the free IRS Direct File program this year.

Eligible Illinois taxpayers can use the program to file their 2024 federal returns directly with the IRS. They’ll also be able to easily transfer the information into MyTax Illinois to file their state taxes.

You can make sure you’re eligible to file through the Direct File program by clicking here.

“IRS Direct File offers a range of benefits for taxpayers, including free federal tax return filing, step-by-step guidance, and real-time online support, explained IDOR Director David Harris. “Eligible taxpayers can then use the verified Direct File information from a federal return to file their state taxes for free at MyTax Illinois , not only saving time but also reducing the likelihood of errors.”

Taxpayers are reminded to file electronically as early as possible. The IDOR suggests choosing direct deposit as the quickest way to get any potential refunds, saying most taxpayers should expect their refunds in about four weeks after electronically filing an error-free return. People can also choose to use tax-preparation software, a tax professional or file a paper Form IL-1040.

The tax filing deadline is Tuesday, April 15, 2025.

For those in need of help, taxpayers can call 1-800-732-8866 or 217-782-3336 or visit IDOR’s website .
