This week, Illinois state leaders are erasing more than $220 million in medical debt.

It’s part of the latest round of the state’s medical debt relief program, which will impact about 170,000 Illinois residents. The average amount erased per person is approximately $1,300.

The program assists people with a household income at or below 400% of the federal poverty level.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker launched the initiative last year and aims to relieve $1 billion in medical debt over the next several years.
