For 15 years, I spent some winter months enjoying Florida weather, golf links, restaurants and American friends. As a Canadian, I always felt that I was among friends in a country that was Canada’s best friend.

But today I find myself paraphrasing the lyrics of that classic hit song by the Righteous Brothers : "America, you've lost that lovin' feeling."

In a recent survey conducted by Leger , a major Canadian polling company, only 30% of Canadians saw the United States as an ally. Meanwhile, 27% of Canadians viewed America as an enemy country – and the same percentage saw the United States as merely as a neutral nation.

There is clearly a reason for this sentiment: President Donald Trump has openly said he wants to make Canada " the 51st state," and he is seeking to bring this about by destroying our economy and changing our borders.

On Sept. 11, 2001, Canadians immediately responded to the attacks on American soil by hosting thousands of air passengers who were stranded in Newfoundland.

Canada also expressed its deepest sympathy for the Sept. 11 victims, and it sent troops to Afghanistan to fight those who were behind the terrorist attacks.

Yet today there is only silence among too many Americans as President Trump assaults Canada and threatens its destruction.

There are hundreds and hundreds of thousands of Canadian snowbirds who annually contribute billions of dollars to Florida's economy alone.

Yet the Trump administration now plans to require Canadians who stay in the United States for more than 30 days to register with the U.S. government – and if we aren't registered and fingerprinted, we could be subject to financial and criminal punishment.

Where, my friends, is that lovin' feeling?

You’ve lost more than you know.

I am a very proud Canadian who is reflecting a nation's current mood.
