IOWA CITY — Florida International transfer Ashton Williamson has committed to Iowa basketball , he announced May 21.

Williamson, a 6-foot-2 170-pound guard, averaged 7.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists in roughly 24 minutes per game during his freshman season. He will join the Hawkeyes with three seasons of college eligibility remaining.

A native of Gary, Indiana, Williamson spent time as a post-grad playing at Sunrise Christian Academy. Williamson's offers included FIU, Western Kentucky and Northern Illinois.

Williamson appeared in 33 games for FIU last season, including 16 starts. His shooting splits were indicative of a freshman who still has plenty of room to become more efficient offensively. Williamson shot 39.4% from the field, 32.9% from deep and 67.6% from the free throw line. Williamson attempted 85 3-pointers.

Williamson's assist-to-turnover ratio also could use improvement. His 2.7 assists per game were paired with 1.9 turnovers per game.

Williamson has shown an ability to be disruptive defensively. He averaged 1.6 steals per game during his freshman season. There were seven games in which he recorded at least three steals, including one with four.

Williamson scored in double figures on 10 occasions last season. He drilled a career-high four 3-pointers against Kennesaw State on Feb. 27. Williamson flashed his ability to impact the game in a variety of ways in a Nov. 18 game against Howard, finishing with nine points, a career-high eight assists, six rebounds and one steal.

Williamson is an unpolished prospect but has upside after showing glimpses of his capabilities as a freshman. The numbers he put up as a freshman indicate a player who could affect the game on multiple levels. But Williamson now takes a major step up in competition, which adds another variable into his development path.

Regardless of what his role looks like during the 2025-26 season, Williamson has the potential to be a long-term building block for head coach Ben McCollum and company.

Iowa 's 2025-26 projected scholarship roster now sits at 11.

The Hawkeyes brought in five Drake transfers, including reigning Missouri Valley Player of the Year Bennett Stirtz. The Hawkeyes also landed former Kansas State guard Brendan Hausen and former Robert Morris forward Álvaro Folgueiras. A pair of high school prospects, Trevin Jirak and Tate Sage, will join Iowa as freshmen. The lone scholarship returner from last season's Iowa team is Cooper Koch.

Along with Stirtz and Kael Combs, Williamson is another primary ball-handling guard who could help initiate offense and serve as a playmaker for the Hawkeyes.
