Iowa can finish the 2024 season with its third consecutive win if it can take down Missouri in the Music City Bowl Monday.

The Hawkeyes (8-4, 6-3 in Big Ten play) have won four of their last five games. But No. 23 Missouri (9-3, 5-3 in SEC play) presents a tough test with a defense that ranks in the top 20 nationally in points allowed per game.

The Music City Bowl has been around since 1998.

This is Iowa's second appearance in the game. The Hawkeyes played in the 2022 edition against Kentucky, winning 21-0. Mizzou has never played in the game.

However, both Iowa and Missouri have another connection to the Music City Bowl.

Iowa and Missouri were slated to play in the 2020 Music City Bowl, but three days before the game, Missouri pulled out due to COVID-19 issues within the program.

The conference tie-ins for the Music City Bowl have changed over the years, but the Big Ten has won it each of the last three seasons.

Missouri holds a 7-6 series lead, but the Hawkeyes own the only victory in modern history.

From 1892 to 1910, the two programs met 12 times, with Missouri winning seven. It took another century before they played again when Iowa beat Missouri 27-24 in the 2010 Insight Bowl. In that matchup, Micah Hyde's 72-yard interception returned for a touchdown, which gave Iowa the lead in the fourth quarter and proved to be the game-winner.

Missouri entered 2024 with high expectations after an 11-2 year in 2023, capped off with a win over Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl. The Tigers were ranked No. 11 in the preseason AP Top 25 and got as high as No. 6.

But multiple losses by big margins — 41-10 at Texas A&M and 34-0 at Alabama — ended Mizzou's hopes of contending in the SEC. A late-season loss at South Carolina effectively ended the team's outside shot at making the inaugural 12-team playoff.

Missouri hoped to have a high-power offense in 2024, but its 29.1 points per game ranks just 62nd in the Football Bowl Subdivision. QB Brady Cook dropped from 21 passing touchdowns in 2023 to just nine this year, and the running back room never found a replacement for Cody Schrader (1,627 rushing yards in 2023).

Iowa in bowl games under Kirk Ferentz

This is Iowa's 22nd bowl game invitation under Kirk Ferentz, who is 10-10 in postseason play. (The 2020 Music City Bowl was canceled.)

Their last bowl game win came on Dec. 31, 2022, when the Hawkeyes beat Kentucky, 21-0, in the Music City Bowl.

Ferentz is one of 19 coaches with 10 bowl victories, according to the University of Iowa.

Will Luther Burden play in the Music City Bowl?

Star Missouri wide receiver Luther Burden III will not play in the Music City Bowl, according to reports .

Burden tallied 21 receiving touchdowns and four rushing touchdowns over a three-year career at Missouri. He is expected to be a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft .
