Nothing gets some people more fired up than a friendly debate over why their state is better than the others —"Our food is out of this world," "Dude, our sports teams can mop the floor with yours," or "Does your state have 825 miles of beaches? I think not!"

But which state is actually the best? U.S. News & World Report released a list of the "Best States for 2025" last month, ranking all 50 states from best to worst.

Since 2017, the ranking has assessed all 50 states across eight categories: healthcare, education, natural environment, opportunity, economy, crime and corrections, infrastructure and fiscal stability.

Where did Florida rank on the list of best states in 2025?

The Sunshine State placed sixth out of 50, with particularly good scores on economy, education and fiscal stability.

"With millions of visitors each year to its beaches, major amusement parks centered around Orlando and cruise ships departing from ports on both coasts, tourism is a major contributor to Florida's gross domestic product," the U.S. News and World Report list says.

"The state’s agriculture industry is also robust, with Florida groves producing many of the country’s oranges and a winter vegetable industry that makes agriculture a year-round enterprise."

Utah has been crowned the best state in the country, with U.S. News highlighting its diverse economy and industries.

“Utah was probably known (25 years ago) for three things: ‘Footloose,’green Jell-O, and the third would be a very youthful workforce,” Curtis Blair, president and CEO of the Provo-based Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce, said to the outlet.

“There’s a lot that has happened in Utah in the last 20 years where we have moved … to being an entrepreneurial, startup state.”
