America's newest federal holiday is right around the corner.

Juneteenth is an important day that celebrates the emancipation of African Americans. Considered the longest-running African American holiday, it has grown in recognition and significance since becoming a federal holiday in 2021. Communities use this day to honor resilience, culture and progress through various events, gatherings and activities.

Here's what to know about the holiday.

What is Juneteenth?



Juneteenth commemorates the events of June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas and ordered all enslaved people in the state to be set free. Slavery in the United States wouldn't formally be abolished until months later on Dec. 6 with the ratification of the 13th Amendment.

The newly freed people in Texas coined "Juneteenth" by combining "June" and "nineteenth" in honor of that day.

Although various states have recognized Juneteenth, including Missouri , in one form or another since its inception, it wasn't officially recognized as a federal holiday until 2021 when President Joe Biden designated it as such .

When is Juneteenth 2025?



Juneteenth will be celebrated on Thursday, June 19, 2025. The holiday is also often celebrated on the third Saturday of June, with many events taking place on that day as well.

Is Juneteenth a state holiday in Missouri?



Yes, Juneteenth is a state holiday in Missouri and is observed every 19th day of June. As such, all state offices are closed on that day, unless it falls on the weekend, in which case offices will be closed either the preceding Friday or following Monday.
