LAUREL, Md. (WUSA) - A man is recovering after a propane tank explosion in Laurel, Maryland.

It happened Saturday as vendors were setting up for the town’s annual street festival.

“I looked up and there was just a cloud of smoke,” vendor Ashley France-Howell said.

Yanina Quiliano was setting up when the propane tank exploded and said it was scary. She said a man was screaming because he had burned his chest.

“And then there was a second boom, and you felt the heat. I was right here, and the flames were coming from down there, and you just felt all of this heat,” vendor Denise Harrington said.

Daniel Anthonio said, “The fire kept getting bigger.”

“I saw a man like running out of the fire, like crawling out of the fire,” Ashley France-Howell said.

No one was killed in the propane tank explosion.

France-Howell was setting up her booth right next to the propane tank that exploded.

“We were about 15 feet away,” she said.

The festival is an event that the community looks forward to every year.

“It’s important in terms of bringing the community out and bringing the community together and then the local vendors were able to feature the items that they have and share them with the community,” vendor James Brown said.

Although the parade was cancelled, the festival continued after the explosion.

“It was frightening, very frightening,” Harrington said.

Those closest to the explosion are grateful to be alive.

“Absolutely. I’m just thankful that I’m okay. My family’s OK,” France-Howell said.

Quiliano said she and her business are safe.

“I’m safe. My business is safe, and that’s the main thing and nobody, no casualties, you know? It was just material things that I believe with insurance, you can claim it and you will be OK,” she said.

Authorities said the man who was hurt suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
