The autopsy report for Charles Faggart, a Jacksonville father and business owner who died in police custody, has been completed but is being withheld from the public. This decision comes amid an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death at the Duval County Jail on April 10. The State Attorney’s Office has obtained the report from the Medical Examiner’s Office, however, details are not being disclosed while the investigation is active. According to First Coast News , this confidentiality maintains the integrity of the ongoing inquiry.

During the events that resulted in Faggart's death, it was initially claimed by corrections officers that he had admitted to using fentanyl. This claim, found in an incident report, has been contested by Faggart's family through their attorney, Belkis Plata. "Medical professionals we consulted have reviewed Charles’s hospital records and confirmed that no fentanyl was detected in his system upon admission—contrary to statements in a police report alleging that Charles told officers he had taken fentanyl," Plata said in a statement on behalf of the family. The credibility of the officers who made the report, all nine of which have been removed from duty and stripped of their corrections authority, is questionable as they themselves are under investigation. This information was corroborated by a statement obtained by First Coast News .

Tracey Karpas, Faggart's mother, has articulated her grief and her desire for clarity and justice in this case. "I’m just looking for justice, that’s all. I’m not looking to start trouble. I’m just looking to end it because this is ridiculous‚" she told News4JAX . "I miss my son." The family's push for transparency is set against the backdrop of a partially redacted incident report released by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office which did not satisfy their need for a full account of the events leading to Faggart's death.

While details of the autopsy are closely guarded, the Jacksonville community continues to question the opaque nature of the investigation. A spokesperson for the JSO, responding earlier this week to inquiries about the status of their part of the investigation, said, "The case continues to be active, and we await follow-up from the SAO in their portion of the investigation," which was reported by Action News Jax .
