Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen has been impressed with cornerback Tyson Campbell.
Naturally, much of the attention on the
Jacksonville Jaguars with OTAs underway is on the offense, but the defense is undergoing its own transition under new defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile. One player, in particular, who is off to a fast start this offseason and someone head coach Liam Coen highlighted after a recent practice is cornerback Tyson Campbell. “I thought he’s done a nice job so far. I have," Coen said
via Jaguars on SI. "He has those fluid movements, long range. I thought he had a nice day, specifically today. But also, leading up into today (Monday)." While question marks swirled around the
Jaguars ' secondary this offseason, following a 2024 season where the Jacksonville pass defense was often picked apart, Campbell has continued to provide some stability for this unit. In the early stages, the new defensive scheme under Campanile seems to fit Campbell's skill set well. "He's done a nice job stacking blocks," Coen added. During Campanile's one season in Green Bay as the linebackers coach, under defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, that secondary played with more vision on the quarterback, to hopefully generate more plays on the ball, along with more off-man coverage. As Coen described, we are going to see more of that style of play from Campbell and the Jaguars' secondary as a whole. Like any defense, there are going to be core principles that Campanile teaches and leans on, but this is also going to be a very malleable scheme, and one that is quick to adjust based on the opponent and what his own players do well. Those different elements--the scheme, play-style, and flexibility of the defense--can help Campbell elevate, which in turn will help elevate the play of the entire secondary. "I just think that’s kind of where he’s going to be able to excel," Coen said. "He's got confidence right now, which is always good from a corner. I’ve been really pleased with Tyson thus far.”
