After Tuesday's OTA practice, Jaguars' HC Liam Coen highlighted two WRs to watch for when it comes to final roster spots at hat position.
We know what the top of the
Jacksonville Jaguars' wide receiver depth chart will look like, but what about beyond those top four roster spots? We can safely say that Brian Thomas Jr., Travis Hunter, Dyami Brown, and Parker Washington will take up four spots on the wide receiver depth chart. However, when it comes to that fifth and maybe even sixth roster spot, that is where the competition will be taking place. Following Tuesday's fourth OTA practice, head coach Liam Coen was asked what he's seen from the receivers who are competing for that final roster spot or two. While it's still early, there are two players in particular that Coen highlighted. "Josh Cephus has done some good things over the course of the offseason program,"
said Coen after Tuesday's practice. "I think (Cam) Camper has shown up in a way. He made a big play today, obviously, on the touchdown, a great tracking throw by Nick (Mullens). He's done a nice job." Cephus went undrafted last April out of UT-San Antonio and appeared in one game for the
Jaguars last season, during the team's Week 14 matchup with Tennessee. Cephus played six snaps and had no targets in that game,
per PFF . Camper, meanwhile, signed with the Jaguars as a UDFA following this year's draft after spending the 2024 season at Boise State. During that year, he caught 58 passes at nearly 16 yards per catch with four touchdowns, and nearly totaled 1,000 receiving yards. With that said, it is still early in this process, and these young wideouts are still in the process of learning a new system.
As Trevor Lawrence described recently , this is an offense under Coen that can give you all the answers, but it also puts a lot on the players' plates, which means that as the playbook is being installed, there is a lot to learn. "That whole group, I don't want to say they're swimming, but at times they're going to be," Coen added. "There's so much when these guys come in post-draft, especially later on, and an install of a whole new system. Our vets and these guys have been in an offense for, let's call it a month and a half, now these guys get put into it right in the middle of an install. "It's really hard to judge some of that, but I think they've done a nice job of trying to handle it in the heat, with the elements, doing a lot of running. We'll see how those guys end up competing in training camp, though." Knowing what we know about Coen's offense at this point, when it comes to determining who will earn that final roster spot--or two--having the versatility to be moved around the formation will be important, as will the player's willingness to help out in the run game as a blocker. Then, of course, there is always going to be a certain prerequisite for each of these players when it comes to reliability as a pass catcher and route running abilities. However, perhaps the biggest factor when it comes to making these final roster decisions will be consistency. Day in and day out, who provides a steady presence, both in terms of making plays when the ball comes their way and when it comes to knowing the playbook inside and out, and being positioned where they need to be.
