This offseason, the
Jacksonville Jaguars' offense has had a lot of speed added to it, especially at the wide receiver position. "I think we've definitely addressed the ability to strike from a distance,"
said Liam Coen about the additions to the offense during free agency and the draft. Joining Brian Thomas Jr., who has 4.33 speed of his own, at the receiver position are Dyami Brown and Travis Hunter. Brown brings another vertical presence and YAC ability to the
Jaguars ' offense, while Hunter is an all-around high-end athlete. Speed can obviously mean big and explosive plays for an offense, whether that be stretching the field vertically or by getting the pass-catcher the ball in space where he can make defenders miss and pick up yards after the catch. However, beyond that facet, having speed throughout the wide receiver room provides Liam Coen with options when it comes to how he gets the ball to these receivers. This can include attacking different levels of the field and doing so in a variety of ways, with the routes that each player is asked to run, along with introducing some pre-snap motion, jet sweeps, or other designed touches to keep the defense off-balanced and guessing. "I know that will be a weapon for those guys individually and for us as a unit to do the things that we want to implement from a scheme standpoint or from an individual, attacking routes, building route trees, those types of aspects for those guys,"
said offensive coordinator Grant Udinski on Monday. When a defense has to respect the speed that an offense has, that can force defenders to spread out as they protect against the downfield play, which can then create opportunities over the middle or underneath, and even in the run game as well. The emphasis this offseason by the Jaguars has been to make sure that there is "balance," as Coen put it, around Trevor Lawrence so he is consistently being put in positions to be successful. This added speed element at wide receiver is another component to that.
