A man was hospitalized after shooting at officers who returned fire late Sunday night, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Shortly after 11 p.m., the Sheriff's Office said four officers arrived at the man's home in the 1800 block of Sandalwood Boulevard after his family called the police and said he fired shots with his pistol and talked about hurting himself. JSO Chief Alan Parker said the man, identified as 51-year-old Andreas Wetzel, had been drinking wine before officers arrived at his home and shot his gun to "let off some steam." When the officers made contact with Wetzel, Parker said he was sitting in his car with the gun. JSO said Wetzel shot at the officers after they asked him several times to get out of the car, prompting them to shoot him. Wetzel was shot in the torso, Parker said. Once Wetzel was stable at the hospital, according to JSO, officers asked him why he was drinking leading up to the incident. Wetzel stated he has been dealing with "long-standing relationship issues" and was depressed from it, Parker said. The officers involved in the shooting were Brandon Nelson, Katy Hrkach, Joseph Neighbor and Vincent Davis Jr., according to Parker. This marks the sixth officer-involved shooting in 2025 for JSO.
