UPDATE: Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office was called to an apartment complex across the street from Westside High School early Wednesday morning for reports of shots fired. The call came in around 7:45 a.m.

When officers arrived at the location on Firestone Road, they found a man between 30-35 who had been shot multiple times, Jacksonville police said at a news conference. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses told investigators they heard the gunshots and saw men running from the apartment, police said. Several people are detained and Duval schools police helped detain them, JSO said.

The school remained on lockdown before 11 a.m. “The school remains on a lockout out of an abundance of caution due to police activity in the neighborhood of the school. This activity is not related to the school. All students and staff are safe,” Duval schools officials told Action News Jax.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call JSO.
