RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Former state treasurer Janet Cowell will be the next mayor to lead the City of Oaks. Cowell claimed victory in the Raleigh mayor’s race before it was called the night of the election. Results from the NC State Board of Elections showed her as the top vote-getter among a field of five candidates. With all precincts reporting, Cowell netted 131,079 votes (nearly 60%). Her closest challenger, Paul Fitts, received 40,324 votes (18%), according to data from the NCSBE . Cowell will succeed incumbent Mary-Ann Baldwin, who did not seek re-election. Cowell told CBS 17 as votes began leaning in her favor that she is excited to take office and hopes to meet soon with City Manager Marchell Adams-David. As Raleigh’s mayor, Cowell will serve a two-year term.
