Former football coach and veteran broadcaster Jimmy Johnson is retiring from Fox Sports’ NFL coverage after more than 30 years in the studio.

Johnson, 81, announced his retirement Monday on morning show “The Herd With Colin Cowherd.”

“The most fun I ever had in my career, that’s counting Super Bowls and national championships, was at Fox Sports,” he said.

“But I’ve made an extremely difficult decision,” he said. “I’ve been thinking about it for the last four or five years and I’ve decided to retire from Fox. I’m going to miss it. I’m going to miss all the guys. I’ll see them occasionally. It’s been a great run starting 31 years ago.”

Johnson coached at Oklahoma State and the University of Miami — where he won a national championship —before jumping to the NFL.

In five seasons, he won two Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys before his first stint at Fox’s Sunday pre- and post-game show in 1994. He returned to the NFL sidelines in 1996 for four seasons with the Miami Dolphins before heading back to TV full time after the 1999 season.

Speculation about Johnson’s future began percolating during Fox’s pregame coverage of last month’s Super Bowl when the network aired a nearly 5-minute tribute to the Hall of Famer.

“Fox NFL Sunday” is hosted by Curt Menefee, Terry Bradshaw, Michael Strahan, Howie Long, Jay Glazer and Rob Gronkowski. “Gronk” recently denied rumors he was returning to the NFL after four years of retirement.
