A mistrial was declared Wednesday for the man accused of killing three people and injuring three others in a 2023 mass shooting in Annapolis. Charging documents state 45-year-old Charles Robert Smith shot six people following an argument about parking. The incident occurred just before 8 p.m. on June 11, 2023, in the 1000 block of Paddington Place. An Anne Arundel County judge said State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess made “several transgressions” that tainted the testimony of Smith. “This was a thorough, professional, and hard-fought case by the prosecution and defense,” Leitess said in a statement. “The state will try this case again and seek justice for the victims.” Nicholas Mireles, 55, his son, Mario Mireles Ruiz, 27, and family friend Christian Marlon Segovia, 25, were the three men fatally shot. Smith faced three counts of first-degree murder, three counts of attempted first-degree murder. He also faced hate crime charges since the victims were Hispanic. This report will be updated.
