The 26th Annual Penguin Swim will take place on New Year’s Day in Ocean City.

If jumping into a freezing cold ocean sounds like a good way to start 2020, you’re the perfect candidate for the annual penguin swim in Ocean City. Each year on New Year's Day, hundreds of brave souls flock to the beach at the Princess Royale and jump into the cold water, raising money for the Atlantic General Hospital Foundation. The charitable event includes games, activities, a parade, the swim, and an awards ceremony.

Participants are encouraged to dress in costumes for the big swim, and anything goes. All will be on display as the swimmers make their way down the beach in the pre-swim parade. But don’t worry; if staying warm is your top priority, boring old wetsuits are allowed. Swimmers should also consider how they are going to warm up after that dip in 40-degree water. In addition to bragging rights, swimmers can win prizes for collecting the most money for the Atlantic General Hospital Foundation.

The cost to participate is only $25, and each swimmer gets a free event t-shirt. You can raise money as an individual or as a team, and prizes will be handed out according to age. There are also additional merchandise prizes for individuals that raise between $50 and $499. You can pre-register online and onsite the day of the event.

The registration desk opens at 10 a.m. on January 1, 2020, at the Princess Royale Hotel. Can’t make it to Ocean City? You watch all the action via live-stream or sign up to be a cyber swimmer. Simply register online and document your swim in the nearest body of water. Post your pics on Instagram with the hashtag #OCPenguinSwim, and you can still win prizes for your fundraising efforts!
