A Columbia Pike shop known for its extensive selection of wines and beers is changing hands after almost 20 years.

The owners of K-1 Beer and Wine at 2516 Columbia Pike are preparing to retire, co-owner Dae Choi told ARLnow. His mother, Bun Kim, bought the shop in 2006 and passed it down to Choi and his brother, Sang Kim, when she retired a decade ago.

Now, both brothers are ready to say farewell. Choi hopes to move back to South Korea, to be closer with family.

“We are just looking for another life now,” Choi said. “I’ll always appreciate my customers everywhere, and this region, Arlington County.”

Choi arrived in the United States with a background in stock broking, but took over K-1 with Kim in around 2015. Over the years, he said he came to view regulars as family, chatting and sharing laughs with them from behind the cashier counter.

Located in an unassuming brick strip mall next to a shoe store, the shelves of K-1 are stocked with an extensive array of domestic and imported IPAs, stout, pilsner and lager — many of them hard finds. Domestic products are sourced from all over the country, from California to Vermont.

The shop is also home to an extensive selection of European wines, as well as a couple lottery machines, snacks and a mini counter for United States Postal Service operations.

The store applied for a continuance of operation license from the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority on Feb. 13. As of today (Monday), the application is pending.

If all goes well, planned new owner Rajen Patel could take the reins as soon as early April. Based in Maryland, Patel has operated retail businesses for about 20 years, and he currently owns two convenience stores in Kentucky.

Regulars should fear not — Patel does not plan to make any extensive changes. A close friend of the owners, Patel said he’s learned about K-1’s operations from Kim directly.

“I like to keep the taste of the current customers, and I normally go by their advice,” Patel told ARLnow. “I normally like to keep the structure as is, and then just add the product that that the current customers are looking for.”
