KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - School districts across Kansas are navigating the new open enrollment issue ahead of the first day of school. A new Kansas law mandates all public schools in the state must allow students who live outside of the district to enroll in any district that has openings. Districts determine availability looking at a number of issues including both current and projected enrollment, classroom size, and the number of teachers and other staff. State law requires districts to post the number of openings available for students from other districts. Each district is now in the process of reviewing applications from students hoping to take advantage of the open enrollment option.
BLUE VALLEY
The Blue Valley School District has a handful of openings available for open enrollment transfer students at Aspen Grove Elementary and Blue Valley Southwest, according to the
district’s website . The district is in the process of reviewing applications through July 15. USD 204 announced it’s classrooms are already full with students who live in the school district. The district said it will not be able to accept any nonresident students for the 2024-2025 school year, according to it’s
website . The De Soto school district says it is growing. Even with higher enrollment the district plans to accept some transfer students for the 2024-25 school year. Additional information about the district’s open enrollment process is available on the

GARDNER EDGERTON
The Gardner Edgerton School District is reviewing the applications for all students who made open enrollment requests. The district said it does have limited spots available for new students. The district’s capacity report for each school in the district is
available online . The Kansas City, Kansas, School District has more than 500 openings available at schools. The openings include more than 400 open enrollment positions at the 28 elementary schools in the district. The district also has about 100 openings in its seven middle schools and a total of about 115 openings at its five high schools.
OLATHE
Information about openings at specific schools and special services is available on the
Olathe School District’s website . The district is in the process of handling a non-resident lottery selection through July 15. On July 16, the in-district transfer window reopens for any remaining spots. The
Piper School District in Kansas City, Kan. says it is at capacity. The district says families should check back next year for announcements regarding open enrollment.
SHAWNEE MISSION
A number of schools in the Shawnee Mission School District are too full to accept any out-of-district transfer students. Other schools will be accepting transfers. The full list of openings at each school in the district is available on the
Shawnee Mission School District website . The Spring Hill School District warned families it is over capacity based on staffing and adjusted enrollment for growth. Due to the estimates, the district will not have openings available for non-resident students, according to the
district’s website . The Turner School district in Kansas City, Kan. has a total of two dozen openings at schools across the district. Any student considering transferring to an out-of-district school is required to remain in good standing with the new school district. Priority will be given to any siblings of a nonresident student already accepted and enrolled in a school in the district, student with parents working in the district, children with parents in the military, and more. Transportation is not provided for students to attend a school in another district.
