Only a day after adding Gardner Minshew, the Kansas City Chiefs are signing another potential backup quarterback for Patrick Mahomes, who is already familiar with the system.According to a report from NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Chiefs are re-signing quarterback Bailey Zappe on a one-year deal. The deal was announced hours after the Minshew signing. Kansas City may have opened the door for a potential backup quarterback position competition.Zappe spent training camp last year with Kansas City and was on the Chiefs practice squad for the season's first few weeks. The 25-year-old was never activated by Kansas City in 2024 and later signed by the Cleveland Browns to start their Week 18 season finale. In the game against the Baltimore Ravens, he completed 16 passes for 170 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. The former New England Patriots 2022 fourth-round NFL Draft pick has a career record of 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, completing 62.1 percent of his passes. Minshew's health could be a factor in the signing, but it does provide depth at the position heading into next season.
