A Kansas City man was shot and killed by police Thursday night after authorities said he confronted officers with a large knife while they attempted to arrest him in connection with a domestic assault.

Kansas City police responded to a report of domestic violence around 5:30 p.m. in the 7000 block of North Robinhood Lane.

The victim, a woman, left the home and met police at a nearby location. She was taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation.

Around 8:40 p.m., officers arrived at the suspect's home and made contact with him.

According to police, the man exited the house armed with a large knife and advanced toward officers.

One officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man shot by police was identified as 57-year-old Andrew Evans Jr., of Kansas City, Missouri.

A Kansas City police officer sustained minor injuries during the encounter and was treated at the scene.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the shooting.
