WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) — Sunday afternoon phones were ringing off the hook in the Sedgwick County Democratic Party's headquarters as about a dozen volunteers participated in a phone bank, making several calls to check in on voters.

"Asking them if they voted. If they have a plan to vote and we even have people at home that are doing the same thing," said Sedgwick County Democratic Party chair Kristi Kirk when explaining what all they were doing.

Kirk says every day leading up to the election is crucial.

"We don't want people to take their foot off the gas. We want them to still know it's really important to get out," she said. She says volunteers will be back tomorrow doing the same thing.

Across town, the Sedgwick County GOP's headquarters was locked.

KAKE News called and left several messages to talk about what it was doing in the last days leading up to the election but has not heard back yet.

Republicans want to keep the state's Republican supermajority while Democrats want to break it. Johnson County is where they have the best chance to do so which is why the Get Out the Vote action is heaviest there from both parties.

That's also why Johnson County is seeing record voter turnout with more than 200,000 people having cast their ballot early as of Sunday night.

Sedgwick County is also seeing records for early in-person voting this year with over a 35% turnout.

She says local elections are the most important.

“I mean the policies and decisions that those elected officials are making on our behalf impact us every day," Rainwater explains.

Monday is your last chance for early in-person voting. The only location is the Sedgwick County election office located in the historical county courthouse in downtown Wichita. It will be open from 8 a.m. to noon.

After that, you must vote at your assigned voting location.
