LENEXA, Kan. (KAKE) - Police in northeast Kansas say a 53-year-old man accused of killing his wife and son was arrested following a standoff over the weekend. Todd Michael Donovan is charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of 52-year-old Sheila Donovan and 22-year-old Tyler Donovan. He also faces a charge of animal cruelty for allegedly killing his neighbor's dog. Officers responded at around 8:20 p.m. Friday to the report of an armed disturbance in the 7900 block of Hallett in Lenexa. They heard multiple gunshots coming from the area of the home as they arrived. The Lenexa Police Department said officers spoke on the phone with the suspect, who refused to exit the home peacefully. Negotiators spoke with him for nearly two hours before he stopped communicating. A tactical team entered the home shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday and took Todd Donovan into custody. He was taken to an area hospital for a possible overdose. Sheila and Tyler were found dead in the home. The investigation is ongoing.
