(ST. JOSEPH, Mo. KQ2) Residents in the state of Kansas will be able to save a few extra dollars at the start of the new year thanks to the Axe the Food Tax Bill.

Back in 2022, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly signed the bill into law which dropped the state sales tax on groceries each year.

In 2022, the tax was 6.5%, then dropped to 4% in 2023 and dropped to 2% in 2024.

Starting on Jan. 1, 2025, the sales tax will be at 0% for most food and food ingredients.

While there are certain items that will be included in the Axe the Food Tax Bill, items like prepared foods, non-food items, alcoholic beverages and tobacco will not be included.

The state of Kansas expects that an average family of four could save $500 per year on groceries.
