GAINESVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Coming off a disappointing 20-17 loss to Vanderbilt at home, the Wildcats were looking to make another bounce back on the road as they travel to the Swamp to take on the Florida Gators. The Gators, led by backup quarterback DJ Lagway led the Florida to a 48 to 20 win. The Gators beat the Wildcats for the first time since 2020. Florida showed early signs of offensive explosion, getting all the way to the Kentucky 10-yard line. However, the Wildcats defense showed a bend-don’t-break mentality held the Gators to just a field goal. The Kentucky offense had a slow start in the first quarter with just 10 plays, 39 yards and 0 points after the first quarter. Trailing 6-0, the Wildcats' found an explosive play with a flea-flicker that resulted in a 45-yard touchdown pass to Barion Brown. A missed point after attempt kept the score tied at 6. Lagway showed off his arm talent with a 50-yard pass to Elijhah Badger that set up Jadan Baugh for a touchdown. Both Vandagriff and Lagway traded interceptions which kept the ‘Cats trailing 13-6 with the Wildcat offense set up inside the red zone. Four run plays up the middle resulted in Kentucky turning the ball over on downs. The Gators, starting at their own two yard line, quickly flipped the field and found the end zone. With all the momentum, Florida’s defense created another turnover that led to another Gator score. Trailing 27-6, Barion Brown brought hope back to the Wildcat sideline with a 99-yard kickoff return. Brown’s kickoff return set an SEC record for most career kickoff returns. The Gators still took a 14-point lead into the half, going into the lockers up 27-13. The Wildcats opened the second half finding paydirt but the Gator offense was able to match Kentucky enroute to a 48-20 win. With five games left in the season, the Wildcats need three wins to become bowl eligible for the ninth straight year.
