CEDAR HILL — Youth took center stage Saturday afternoon in the finals of the Class 4 District 1 wrestling tournament Northwest High.

The 14 wrestlers standing atop the winners' stand included one senior, three juniors, eight sophomores and a pair of freshmen. Lafayette, which finished as runner-up to Liberty of Kansas City at last year's state championships, defended its district championship.

The Lancers finished with 232 points to beat out CBC (207) for the top spot. Jackson (174), Seckman (133 1/2) and Northwest (121 1/2) rounded out the top five at the 16-team event.

The top four finishers in each weight class will advance to the Class 4 state tournament to be held Friday and Saturday at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.

"Winning this tournament is always one of our goals, but it's also always a real challenge," Lafayette coach Joe Wier said. "CBC''s very tough and we knew teams like Jackson and Northwest were going to challenge, too. But it's always fun to see your kids step up.

"Getting 10 through is key for us. We're hoping to win another state trophy and feel like we've put ourselves in a good position now. Liberty's won the last six titles and they're strong again, but I'm expecting a dogfight. I think there are several teams _ us, CBC, Staley, Park Hill, Columbia Hickman _ that can hopefully put the pressure on Liberty."

Lafayette got district championships from four wrestlers _ sophomore Riley Sumner (38-6) at 120 pounds, junior Calum Brown (33-7) at 126, sophomore Caleb Frankenberger (37-10) at 132 and sophomore Carter Brown (39-4) at 215 _ and runner-up finishes from three othes _ sophomore Max Rowe (36-11) at 106, senior Aidan Schoen (38-6) at 150 and senior Jeremiah Drake (35-13) at 157.

Also qualifying for state for the Lancers were third-place finishers Jackson Tenny (113) and Carter Welsh (175) and heavyweight Roosevelt White III, who placed fourth.

Sumner, who earned second-team All-Metro honors after placing third at state at 106 a year ago, had two technical falls and a pin before winning 4-0 over Seckman's Carson Owens (31-10) in the final at 120. Sumner scored a key takedown in the final period.

Calum Brown, who placed sixth in Columbia at 113 a year ago, posted a 14-0 major decision over Jackson's Mitchell Baker (35-7) at 126 on Saturday. In the final at 132, Frankenberger won by fall in the second period over Jackson's Kade King (38-6). Frankenberger placed third at state at 120 a year ago as a freshman.

In the final at 215, Lafayette's Carter Brown scored a late takedown and went on to a 7-2 decision over CBC's Triston Abram (19-9). Carter Brown earned a third-place state medal at 175 last year as a freshman.

Wier, the Lafayette coach, said the rivalry with CBC is a special one, noting that CBC head coach Jack Flynn and Lafayette assistant coach Sam Richie are roommates.

"They talk smack all the time," Wier joked. "It's a rivalry we appreciate and that both teams really enjoy."

CBC coming on strong

District runner-up CBC went 7-3 in Saturday's semifinals and 4-3 in the title matches.

"We feel like we're peaking at the right time,'' Flynn said. "It's exciting, especially when you realize that seven of the eight we qualified will be back with us next year. The key now is to focus on having another great week of practice to hopefully finish off the season strong next weekend."

The Cadets won four district championships Saturday, getting titles from freshmen Kosta Hatzigeorgiou (43-6) at 106, freshman Waylon Burress (35-7) at 113, sophomore Colin Rutlin (44-3) at 144 and junior Trey Craig (39-5) at 190.

Hatzigeorgiou sandwiched two pins around a tech fall to reach the finals and won 9-3 over Lafayette's Rowe in the title match at 106. At 113, the Cadets' Burress, who entered districts as a No. 3 seed, won by fall in the second period over Seckman sophomore Dorrian Clark (31-11). Clark upset top-seeded Lucas Meier of Northwest in the semifinals.

Rutlin, an All-Metro second-team selection last year after finishing second at state, picked up his third consecutive tech fall for the title win over Northwest's Evan Porter (37-7). Rutlin needed just 35 seconds for a pin in the first round of the districts.

Craig, who earned a runner-up state finish while competing for Liberty before transferring to CBC, used three first-period pins to capture the title at 190 on Saturday. In the title match, he needed just 1:13 to beat Kirkwood's Sutton Ivy (30-7).

CBC received runner-up district finishes from sophomore Michael Poulette (34-13) at 138, junior Tanner Faulkner (38-13) at 165 and senior Triston Abram (19-9) at 215. The Cadets' Mason Todd qualified with a third-place finish at 150.

More champions at Northwest

• Parkway South sophomore Camron Duffield (38-2) won the district championship at 138 with a 15-5 major decision over CBC's Poulette. Duffield earned second-team All-Metro honors last year after a state runner-up finish. He won his first three district matches on Saturday with tech falls.

• In a showdown featuring a pair of 2024 state medalists at 150, Seckman sophomore Chance Ruble (35-5) won 5-2 over Lafayette's Schoen, a fourth-place state medalist last year. Ruble, the No. 2 seed in the district, earned a sixth-place state medal last year.

• Rolla's Kayden Kinder (47-4) won 4-1 over Lafayette's Drake in the title match at 157.

• At 165, Northwest sophomore Jeremiah Clines (40-3) posted an 8-2 overtime win over CBC's Faulkner (38-13). Cline, the top seed, reached the final with two first-period pins and an 8-4 decision.

• At heavyweight, Jackson's Brysen Wessell (37-6) won by fall late in the first period to get by Eureka sophomore Noah McCollum (40-9). McCollum, the No. 2 seed, reached the title match with three pins of his own.
