LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) — More than a year after a crash claimed the life of a 19-month-old, police are still searching for her father — the man they said was responsible.

New details about the crash were revealed in documents obtained by 8 News Now.

Fredy Escamilla-Lopez, 29, is wanted for charges of second-degree murder, reckless driving, child abuse/neglect resulting in substantial bodily harm, duty to stop at the scene of a crash involving death, according to a video posted on the LVMPD’s X account .

The crash occurred on February 18, 2023, at around 11:15 p.m. near the intersection of Spanish Drive and Spanish View Lane in the east valley. Escamilla-Lopez intentionally oversteered his 2004 Nissan Titan in order to “drift or fishtail” from side to side while he was driving on Spanish Drive, according to an arrest warrant filed in September 2023.

This caused him to lose control of the vehicle and cross into oncoming traffic before hitting a block wall just north of Spanish View Lane, injuring the two young girls who were in the vehicle with him, police said.

The warrant said Escamilla-Lopez was “likely unrestrained” and was holding the 19-month-old victim, Maya Escamilla, in his lap. Nevada law states that any child younger than 6 must sit in an approved car seat. Children under 2 must ride in a rear-facing safety seat in the back seat of the vehicle.

The nine-year-old victim was also “likely unrestrained” and was sitting in the front seat of the vehicle. The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles recommends that all children under 12 sit in the back seat.

The impact of the crash caused Escamilla-Lopez’s body to crush Maya’s body against the steering wheel, according to the warrant.

A witness who lived nearby heard the collision and saw the pickup truck crash against the wall and saw Escamilla-Lopez running toward him, holding the baby with the 9-year-old victim following him. The witness said Escamilla-Lopez asked him to give him a ride to a nearby residence, the warrant said.

As they arrived at the residence, Escamilla-Lopez recognized a vehicle drive toward them. After a brief physical fight, Escamilla-Lopez gave both children to their mother, the driver of the vehicle, before running away.

Another witness told police she heard a woman, the mother, screaming outside shortly after the collision. The witness’s son and daughter helped perform CPR on the unconscious baby until the fire department arrived, the document stated.

Medical personnel took both children to a local hospital. Maya sustained critical injuries, which she succumbed to two weeks after the crash on March 2, 2023. Her cause of death was listed as blunt force injuries with the manner being accidental.

More than a year after the crash took Maya’s life, police continue to search for Escamilla-Lopez and are asking for help finding him.

The video on LVMPD’s account listed Escamilla-Lopez as six feet tall, 175 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. If you know where he is located, the LVMPD asks that you call Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555 or visit the Crime Stoppers website .

Information leading to his arrest may be eligible for a cash reward, police said.
