While speaking to reporters at the NFL's annual league meetings in April, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell hinted at his team having two sets of joint practices this summer. We now know who one of those sets will be with. The Miami Dolphins announced earlier this week they'd be having joint practices with all three of their preseason opponents, including the Detroit Lions. The Dolphins, who will play the Lions in an exhibition matchup Aug. 16, are also scheduled to play at the Chicago Bears on Aug. 10 and versus the Jacksonville Jaguars on Aug. 23. In their announcement, the Dolphins called the Lions "the best measure of grit perhaps in the entire NFL." Campbell, heading into his fifth season with the Lions, got his start as a coaching intern with the Dolphins in 2010. He later became tight ends coach (2011-15) and was the franchise's interim head coach for 12 games in 2015, leading Miami to a 5-7 record after Joe Philbin was relieved. It's not yet known the other team the Lions are aiming to have joint practices with, but it'll likely be against another preseason opponent. It seems safe to rule out the Los Angeles Chargers due to how early the teams will see one another; the Hall of Fame Game is July 31, and training camp will still be in its early stages. Detroit's other preseason matchups include a road trip at the Atlanta Falcons on Aug. 8 and a home bout with the Houston Texans on Aug. 23. Want to comment on this story? Become a subscriber today.
