FAYETTEVILLE — Following the most dominant SEC weekend in program history, Arkansas might become college baseball’s top-ranked team Monday.

The second-ranked Razorbacks defeated Missouri 14-4 and 16-2 in a pair of 7-inning games Sunday at Baum-Walker Stadium.

Arkansas (30-3, 11-1 SEC) swept the series by a combined score of 51-9, with no game longer than 7 innings. The Razorbacks won by a run-rule score of 21-3 in Saturday’s opener that was postponed the day before due to severe weather.

It was the highest-scoring weekend for Arkansas in SEC play. The Razorbacks scored 50 during a 1997 series victory at South Carolina, which included a 30-7 score in the final game.

Arkansas only batted in 18 innings against Mizzou. The Razorbacks batted in 27 innings during the 1997 series against the Gamecocks.

“We scored 50 runs in less than 24 hours, pretty much,” Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn said around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, 27 1/2 hours after the first pitch of the series. “It’s because our hitters, they battle and make you throw strikes for the most part.”

After top-ranked Tennessee lost a series to Texas A&M on its home field, Arkansas stands a good chance to move up, though it might face competition for the top spot from fifth-ranked LSU and sixth-ranked Texas. The Longhorns, who are tied with the Razorbacks atop the SEC standings, swept third-ranked Georgia this weekend.

Arkansas passed Tennessee as the league’s highest-scoring team with the monster weekend at the plate. The Razorbacks are averaging 10.1 runs per game overall, but in SEC play that number is even higher at 11.5 runs.

“We’re a very tough lineup to face,” Arkansas first baseman Cam Kozeal said. “There are a lot of scary dudes who can hit, hit for power, steal bags when we need it, fight guys off with two strikes. It’s a very complete lineup 1 through 9. It’s a very fun lineup to be a part of.”

Arkansas’ left-handed duo of Kozeal and Charles Davalan starred during the doubleheader. Each homered twice with a grand slam.

Davalan, the leadoff man, hit his homers and had 7 RBI during Sunday’s first game. With Logan Maxwell sitting out to rest his tender hamstring on an unseasonably cold day, Kozeal moved to the No. 3 hole for the finale and had 6 RBI on a pair of home runs. He also doubled.

In SEC-only play, Kozeal is batting .532 with 5 home runs, 5 doubles and 26 RBI. Davalan is batting .429 with 8 home runs, 1 double and 22 RBI in conference-only games.

“To me, that’s a super easy question to answer,” Van Horn said when asked about the recent play of Kozeal and Davalan. “Those guys have been amazing.”

Listed at 5-10, 200 pounds, Kozeal and the 5-9, 190-pound Davalan are similar stature and similar in play at the plate. Both are proficient hitting to the opposite field.

“He’s the first guy I’ll go to if I want to know what the pitches are looking like or [to] bounce ideas off of,” Kozeal said of Davalan.

The Razorbacks recorded 16 hits in each game of the doubleheader and drew a combined 19 walks. They were also hit by a pitch twice in Sunday’s first game after getting hit 4 times Saturday.

“We took our walks, we got hit by pitches, unfortunately. I don’t like our guys getting hit by pitches at all, but if you do, it’s to start an inning or keep an inning going, or whatever,” Van Horn said. “But we got hit by a lot of pitches...at least yesterday. Today, just a lot of walks and a lot of big hits.”

Wehiwa and Kuhio Aloy, who were both held hitless Saturday, rebounded in a major way in the doubleheader. Batting second, Wehiwa was a combined 6 for 8 with 2 walks, 7 runs and 2 RBI. Kuhio moved down to sixth in the batting order and was 5 for 10 with 3 runs and 4 RBI.

Missouri (11-19, 0-11) led 2-0 on RBI singles by Cameron Benson and Cayden Nicoletto in the first inning. The Tigers tied the game 4-4 in the third on a throwing error by catcher Ryder Helfrick and a sacrifice bunt by Mateo Serna.

The Razorbacks took the lead for good in the bottom of the third on Kuhio Aloy’s RBI single to score Kozeal (leadoff double). Wehiwa Aloy also had a 2-out RBI in the inning to score his younger brother.

Davalan’s 3-run home run in the second inning put Arkansas ahead 4-2, and his 399-foot grand slam to right-center field in the fourth was part of a 7-run inning that gave the Razorbacks a 13-4 lead.

Arkansas right-hander Gabe Gaeckle allowed 4 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits and 2 walks during his 4-inning start. Gaeckle struck out 6.

Aiden Jimenez earned the win with a perfect 2-inning relief appearance.

The Razorbacks scored runs on 3 hits and 2 walks against Missouri starter Brady Kehlenbrink in 1 1/3 innings.

Brady Lucas took the loss with 8 runs, 9 hits and 3 walks in 2 innings.

In the finale, Keegan Knutson led off with a walk and scored to put the Tigers ahead 1-0, but the Razorbacks answered with a 5-run first to take command. Kuhio Aloy’s 2-run double put Arkansas ahead 2-1, and Carson Boles added a 3-run home run 396 feet to left.

Kozeal hit a 2-run homer in the second inning to increase the lead to 7-1, and his grand slam in the third gave the Razorbacks a 12-2 lead.

Landon Beidelschies allowed 2 runs (1 earned), 4 hits and 1 walk and struck out 7 during his 4-inning start. Christian Foutch, Cole Gibler and Carson Wiggins each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

“The game’s for the most part over, and they didn’t just come in there and go through the motions,” Van Horn said. “Man, they pitched, and that was really good to see. It gives the coach confidence, the players confidence, and I liked what I saw from the bullpen the last three games.”

The Razorbacks flashed superior talent across the board and put together a terrific day at the plate and on the mound.

Any number of players could be selected here, but Kozeal went 5 for 7 with 2 walks, 5 runs and 8 RBI. He homered twice and doubled twice.

The Razorbacks are scheduled to host Arkansas State on Tuesday at 6 p.m., followed by a weekend series at Georgia.
