I-70 has closed following a deadly crash on Thursday, May 6, involving a tanker and up to six vehicles. The crash happened before 9:30 a.m. and caused a huge backup of traffic.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, at least one person died in the crash. Several vehicles involved in the collision caught fire. In addition to the death, authorities said the truck driver was taken to the hospital.
Colorado Department of Transportation spokeswoman Tamara Rollison said, "We are working with emergency responders and we urge motorists to stay away from the area because of the delays."
I-70 is closed in both directions, between Exit 254-US 40 and Genesee and Exit 260-6th Avenue. Jefferson County Sheriff's Department is encouraging drivers to avoid the area for several hours.
"Our CDOT crews are out there helping with the effort. They are out there as part of the road closure trying to keep things as safe and secure as possible. They are out there working alongside with our other emergency responders," said Rollison.
