Winter Storm Freya is
spreading snow and ice through the Northeast Thursday morning, impacting commutes and prompting flash flood emergencies from the National Weather Service in West Virginia. Schools are closed or opening late throughout the region as the storm makes roads slick. Freya's biggest threat is ice, as freezing rain and snow will fall from Baltimore up the I-95 corridor.

After Freya moves out late Thursday, the winter weather isn’t over.
Winter Storm Garnett will begin dumping snow on the Midwest late Friday and move east, bringing more snow to the I-95 corridor over the weekend. Parts of the Midwest could see up to 4 inches of snow. New York could see up to 5 inches and Boston, up to 6. Next week could bring even more snow for the Midwest and Northeast, but it’s too early for details on an exact timeline or how much snow could fall.
(7:46 a.m. ET) More Than 100 Flights Canceled At Philadelphia Airport
By 7 a.m., more than 100 flights had been canceled at Philadelphia International Airport due to icy conditions. Flightaware.com also reported that
nearly 30 flights were delayed . Dozens of delays and cancellations were also stacking up at Reagan National Airport in Arlington, Virginia.
(7:30 a.m. ET) Schools Closed, Delayed Openings Along Freya’s Path
Hundreds of schools in the Detroit metro area are closed due to the storm. Many announced the closure on Wednesday ahead of the storm.
Several school districts in New Jersey are closed, such as Dumont School District, Freehold Borough School District and Morris County Vocational School district. Many other schools are delaying the beginning of the day between one hour and two hours. Schools across New York are closing their doors or delaying school starts as well. (7:16 a.m. ET) Hail Overnight In Kentucky
People in Mercer County, Kentucky, are reporting that large hail was falling around 1 a.m. local time. X user Chrys Jones shared a photo of some quarter-sized hail, saying that he saw "lots of lightning" as well. Someone else who lives in the area commented that they’d moved to a storm shelter after the storm got a “little too rowdy.”
(6:45 a.m. ET) Where Are The Warnings And Advisories?
Much of the Tri-State area is under winter weather advisories until 1 p.m. While the storm might not drop much snow, the slick conditions are the biggest worry. Ice storm warnings are in effect for the central Appalachians, stretching from central Pennsylvania to western Virginia to eastern West Virginia. The ice could lead to power outages and tree damage and could have major travel impacts.
