Retired marine and Annandale resident Robert F. Gibson's obituary caused some laughs when it called out NoVA drivers saying they were incapable of driving competently.
There are some great things about the NoVA area, but dealing with local drivers is not one of them. One local man hated NoVA drivers and traffic so much that his family made sure it was included in his obituary. Robert Gibson's obituary was featured in the Washington Post in May and had many people chuckling. His obituary states, "A native of Northern Virginia for the last 30 years of his life, he hated how all of you were incapable of driving competently." His widow told News4 that the family wanted to include an aspect of Gibson's daily life in his obituary. She said, "It’s a general sentiment a lot of folks have. He traveled on the Beltway, and traffic is horrendous."
Besides being a frustrated driver during his life, Robert F. Gibson was also a decorated veteran who won the Legion of Merit with Gold Star, Bronze Star with Combat Distinguishing Device, the Meritorious Service Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon. Gibson grew up in Washington, D.C., and served in the Marines for 30 years. He worked in Vietnam twice, and worked in Iraq, Kuwait, and Lebanon, among other countries.
He will soon be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. Rest in peace, Colonel Robert Gibson! And thank you for reminding us to be better drivers.
