ST. LOUIS (Gray News) – A puppy who was found shot in the neck with a bow and arrow is recovering well at a clinic in St. Louis.

According to Stray Rescue St. Louis , Lucky Charm’s surgery to remove the arrow was a success. They describe him as a sweet and gentle dog.

“When he got to us, he was clearly in pain, clearly uncomfortable, you know, but he would still wag his tail a little bit, and he would roll over like he wanted his belly rubbed still, so we knew he was a very sweet dog from the get-go,” Dr. Edie Oliver with Stray Rescue told KMOV .

The 1-year-old dog was found in East Prairie, Missouri, nearly three hours south of St. Louis.

He was found with an arrow “brutally lodged in his throat” and brought to Stray Rescue for help, the shelter said on Monday.

“He was transported here to the safe haven of Stray Rescue where we immediately administered pain medication,” the shelter wrote in a Facebook post . “He’s so kind, so sweet, so gentle. It enrages us to even think about how someone could be so heartless to do something like this to such a sweet soul. How could someone do this?”

In addition to the arrow lodged in his throat, the puppy also had a bullet lodged in his abdomen.

“He was being hunted,” the shelter wrote. “Someone was hunting this puppy. They wanted him dead.”

Stray Rescue decided to name him Lucky Charm.

X-rays revealed the arrow was piercing his trachea, which required a very difficult surgery. Fortunately, Lucky Charm made it through the “complex” procedure that lasted three to four hours.

Veterinarians found that the arrow pierced his trachea and his esophagus. It came right up to his spine but luckily didn’t do any spinal damage.

The surgeons carefully removed the arrow and stitched up both holes in his trachea and esophagus, the shelter said. Veterinarians decided not to remove the bullet in his side because it was an old wound that wasn’t causing any issues.

Amazingly, Lucky Charm is doing great after surgery and is even eating food.

In an updated Facebook post Friday , video showed Lucky Charm exploring the outdoor space at Stray Rescue.

“He’s scared of the wind and loud noises, but he is loving the positive attention he is getting,” the post said.

“This dog needs ALL OF US. Our prayers, our positive vibes, our voice,” the shelter said.
