EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEVV) — Evansville Police say they arrested a man after he crashed a truck into a utility pole while driving under the influence then fled the scene. Officers responded to a hit-and-run wreck on Covert Avenue between Weinbach and Vann around 11 p.m. on Wednesday. Police say they arrived in the area and found a white work truck wrecked on a utility pole, but no one was inside. EPD says officers took the driver into custody nearby, but that he lied about his identity at first. They say he eventually identified himself as Juan Daniel Pedro-Ruiz. Officers say they spoke to a witness who told them they saw Pedro-Ruiz get out of the vehicle and run from the scene of the wreck. During a search, police say they found some synthetic marijuana on Pedro-Ruiz. They say he had bloodshot glossy eyes, slurred speech, and smelled like alcohol. Pedro-Ruiz was arrested and booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail on charges for DUI, drug possession, leaving the scene of a crash, false informing, and driving without ever receiving a license.
