This is probably the only peach tree rooting for the Rockies.
Quietly tucked away in a neighborhood near Utica and West 39th Avenue, the remains of a peach tree roots for the Rockies. It's the idea of baseball combined with the creative mind of Rockies fan Robert Martinez, and for the past year has been a beacon of Rockies support in a forest of blue and orange – not that we're complaining, but it's good to see some support for the boys in purple. [gallery columns="2" size="large" ids="12910,12911"] "It's a peach tree that I planted a few years ago. It died after a few years of giving peaches," Martinez said to 9News. "I'd seen it in my mind first, what we can do with that." That's when he got into contact with an artist and friend who used to be a jeweler off Tennyson Street. He said he could also turn tree stumps into art, so Martinez contracted his friend to create the Rockies relic. His friend then spent a week carving and smoothing the trunk, and added the lettering, among some other finite details, to honor Maritnez's daughters.
A leather-wrapped baseball sits atop the bat, but has since been deteriorating. "It’s been coming apart about a year now. Started last year, that skin off there, but I’ve seen — when they knock home-runs — that leather fly right off,” Martinez said. A bench is planted by the base among some loose rock – that's supposed to represent the 'Rock Pile'.
Martinez says that people come by all the time to take photos with the relic.
