A man has been charged in connection with a fatal shooting near 82nd Street and Holmes Road on Aug. 25, 2024. Prosecutors have charged La’Relle Dennis with second-degree murder and other related offenses. According to court documents, officers responded to reports of gunfire at 1:47 a.m. and found a 2005 silver or light blue Honda Civic partially in the road with its engine running. The vehicle had bullet holes in the windshield, a shattered rear window and damage to both bumpers. A male victim was found in the driver’s seat with a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at 2:05 a.m. Surveillance footage from a nearby home allegedly shows a man resembling Dennis approaching the victim’s vehicle before gunshots were fired. A white SUV, described as similar to the Dodge Journey Dennis drove, was seen fleeing the scene at high speed. Investigators say they recovered a fog light bezel at the crime scene that appeared to match Dennis’ vehicle. The SUV was later found abandoned without license plates and with a bullet hole in the windshield. An affidavit in the case states that a search of Dennis’ bedroom uncovered firearm parts and ammunition that investigators claim were linked to a 7.62x39mm Draco pistol, which they believe is consistent with the weapon used in the shooting. Prosecutors also allege that cellphone data placed Dennis at the scene at the time of the homicide. Dennis is currently in custody.
