VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Police have arrested a man in a fraud attempt that took place after the deaths of two Virginia Beach Police Department officers. Officers Cameron Girvin and Christopher Reese were shot and killed on Feb. 21 by a man they pulled over for an expired registration. The Virginia Beach Police Department began warning citizens to beware of fake fundraisers the same weekend, and now say at least one man tried to take advantage of the outpouring of support from the community for the men’s families and their fellow officers. Investigators on Monday said 25-year-old Caleb Mourning of Norfolk was arrested on March 20 in connection with a fraud attempt connected to the deaths of Girvin and Reese. Mourning did not receive any money as a result of his attempt. He is charged with felony charges of computer fraud, embezzle or larceny greater than $1,000 and obtaining money by false pretenses, greater than $1,000. “On behalf of the VBPD, we thank everyone within our community and across the country that has shown their support for our department, and for the loved ones of Cameron and Christopher,” police said. Anyone interested in donating to the families can do so through the verified fundraisers announced by Virginia Beach police .
