A Fort Myers man was found guilty and sentenced on Tuesday after shooting and killing a Cape Coral man in June 2022. According to a release from the State Attorney's Office, Eduardo Troche-Rodriguez, accomplice Jose Maldonado and the victim, Fernando Montero, were at a Cape Coral home when an argument broke out. Montero then attempted to leave, getting into his car and backing out of the driveway before Troche-Rodriguez and Maldonado shot him multiple times. After the murder, the two fled to Kentucky, where they were later identified after an investigation by the Cape Coral Police Department. Troche-Rodriguez was arrested in Kentucky before being brought to Lee County, where he faced trial. Maldonado was arrested weeks later in Florida, according to the State Attorney's Office. In April 2023, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison, followed by 10 years of probation for second-degree murder with a firearm and robbery. Troche-Rodriguez was sentenced to 21 years in prison with a 20-year minimum, followed by 5 years of probation, for second-degree murder with a firearm.
