VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — On Wednesday, 18-year-old Elijah Santiago was sentenced to 12 years but will only serve three years in prison after shooting at police officers.

In December, Santiago pled guilty to four counts of assault and battery of a law enforcement officer, soliciting another to commit a felony, a concealed weapon charge and a charge of discharging a firearm, all from an incident that happened last August.

On August 13, around 3:42 a.m., the Virginia Beach Police Department responded to a call for a shooting at Trace Court, in the area of Bonney Road. Upon arrival officers heard shots and began to search the area. During the officers search, two people inside a parked car stated that they saw someone fire shots and flee into a nearby apartment.

Approximately 20 minutes after VBPD established a perimeter around the apartment, Santiago came out and pointed a handgun with an extended magazine at police, firing, which resulted in two officers firing shots back at him. Santiago then ran back inside. Uninjured, Santiago did eventually exit the apartment and peacefully surrendered.
