ANNAPOLIS, MD (WBFF) — At the Statehouse today, lawmakers sounded the alarm over the impending release of dozens of undocumented immigrants in Maryland who have committed violent crimes. Concerns were raised about individuals with previous convictions, including murder, carjacking, and rape, soon to be released from jail. One case involved a person convicted of raping a 12-year-old child in front of a 3-year-old.

"We've had some jurisdictions in the state who have just refused to cooperate," said Del. Jesse Pippy.

However, attorneys with Maryland's Bar Association argue that the proposed legislation overreaches. "The bill, as drafted, creates immigration enforcement responsibilities for the state of Maryland which don't match with federal law," said Jonathan Green, an attorney.

Delegate Nino Mangione, who is sponsoring a bill requiring cities and counties to cooperate with immigration officials at every level, expressed frustration. "Why are our local agencies not working with the federal government to keep them off the streets?" he asked.

In Annapolis, there is reluctance among some lawmakers and fear among others that refusing to cooperate could lead to another round of violence. "Public safety is not a partisan issue," said Del. Szeliga. "This is a fundamental responsibility of government."
