Senate President Bill Ferguson said they are still watching any cuts coming from the federal level and how that will affect Maryland’s budget .

Medicaid appeared to be the biggest concern for Ferguson, saying that “the healthcare system cuts are most concerning to watch.”

“If we shifted the Medicaid expansion population, that’s a 50-50 match, that’s about $1 billion that the state would have to take on,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson added that he thinks Maryland will have to pick up more of the federal cost share, or else he says more than 3,00,000 people would be left without health care. A bipartisan joint committee is already monitoring any such cuts.

“We want to make sure we have enough substance and as much clarity as can be obtained before we host one of those hearings,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson said so far, he’s identified more than 400,000,000 cuts, mostly for low-income housing and energy assistance.

“I think we will have a better idea of what a special session looks like when we start to pull those joint hearings together,” Ferguson said. “It’s really tough to say until Congress moves on a budget.”
