SALISBURY, Md. – Maryland State Police are reminding folks to drive safely ahead of Cinco De Mayo weekend.

Troopers will be conducting statewide DUI patrols and high-visibility enforcement.

You can expect to see an increased presence along routes 13 – 50 – 404 – and Maryland Route 413.

Maryland Department of Transportation officials say 158 people die every year as a result of impaired driving and more than 2,700 are injured.

“We’ll probably have double the number of troopers working on the weekend and their main focus is going to be impaired driving enforcement,” said Lt. Timothy Corbin with Maryland State Police, “so we urge the public to celebrate responsibly and if they do have an occasion where they drink too much, please do the responsible thing and call a ride share, or taxi, or friend to get you home safely.”

Over the past five years in Maryland – nearly 800 people have lost their lives in a crash involving an impaired driver.
