Golf is back in Baltimore!

** CORRECTION: An original version of this story stated that this was the first time the PGA Tour had come to Maryland in approximately 60 years. That was incorrect. The correct statement is that it's the first time the PGA Tour has come to the Baltimore area since 1962. This article has been corrected to reflect that. We apologize for the confusion.

For the first time since 1962, a PGA Tour event is coming to the Baltimore area! According to the heads of Caves Valley Golf Club, the BMW Championship—a leg of the FedEx Cup playoff—is scheduled to come to this Owings Mills golf club in August 2021.

The BMW Championship has long-held the second-to-last spot in the FedEx Cup, limiting the field of golfers from a robust 70 to a more standard weekend tournament number of 30.

Since gaining the sponsorship of the German luxury car brand, the BMW Championship tournament was played in and around Chicago, occasionally landing at courses in Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Missouri. The contest, which traces its origins to the turn of the past century, was long called the Western Open. Prior to 2006, the tournament was played for 15 years straight at the famed Cog Hill Golf & Country Club in Lemont, Illinois.

Last year, American golfer Justin Thomas took home the $9,500,000 purse after winning the BMW Championship with a very strong showing of 25 strokes under par, beating out fellow American Patrick Cantlay by three strokes. More famous golfers such as Tiger Woods, Rickie Fowler, Phil Mickelson, and Jordan Spieth all had strong showings, but all finished outside the top 10.

The BMW itself has seen its share of memorable performances. As is the case many modern golf tournaments, the redoubtable Tiger Woods holds the BMW record for the highest margin of victory, with eight strokes. Woods is also tied with Dustin Johnson at two career wins at the BMW Championship.
