Who's under the mask!? Spoilers for "The Masked Singer" ahead!
The Masked Singer was a night of returns. The show not only brought back Group B for their second round of performances, but we also saw the return of Community actor Joe McHale—only this time he was disguised as a very fresh Nick Cannon.
At the end of the show, the audience sent Baby Alien flying back to his home planet, and the judges were extremely stumped by who was under the mask. Although most of them guessed comedians, the masked puppet turned out to be out-of-this-world, former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez.

Sanchez fooled the judges by putting on a fake Eastern European accent throughout the show. In order to prep for The Masked Singer, Sanchez wore a really heavy backpack at home and used some skills he learned from the NFL.
“I also wore a really heavy backpack when I would practice at home,” he said. “Just put some dumbbells in it and made it like 35 to 40 pounds and started belting out tunes in the house. Everybody’s kind of like, why are you doing this? And what are you practicing for?”
“I’ve learned how to do that, how to create a routine for whatever I’ve done,” Sanchez continued. “And to be successful on Sunday it starts the previous Sunday in reviewing your past game and then ramping up for the next game with the appropriate preparation. And so that’s exactly the way I went about it with this. I would compartmentalize each thing, whether it’s the choreography, or the singing part, or the puppeteering. I would practice with other songs, reading books, listening to stuff on the radio. And so that kind of brought the puppet to life. It was all part of the regimen and I had a great time doing it.”
Baby Alien’s unmasking leaves the other three Group A competitors safe for another week. Let’s take a look at the clues they gave to see if you can spot who’s hiding under the mask.
Serpent
Courtesy of The Masked Singer
Song: “The Bones” by Maren Morris
Clues: The Serpent has taken an “unorthodox” path to get to where he is. Starting out, he could barely make rent, and to get by, he sold clothes. He did manual labor and had patience, but he always heard “no." Serpent stayed true and finally broke through. In a way, his initial failures were a gateway to The Masked Singer. The foundation of hard work he built over the years is finally paying off.
Throughout Serpent’s clue package, fans could slither a glimpse at the following potential clues: an ATM with “Error” on it, a bacon croissant sandwich, $2, scrubs, origami, palm tree, a pink Cadillac, a doorbell, butter, and a croissant
At the end of Serpent’s performance, his childhood clue was revealed to be a baby bottle on wheels.
Judges’ Guesses: Taye Diggs, Jessie Williams, Brian McKnight
The Internet’s Guesses: Leslie Odom Jr., Taye Diggs, Jamie Foxx
My Guess: Leslie Odom Jr. My original guess was Brian McKnight, but I’m switching it up based on the fact that the Serpent sings left-handed, just like Leslie Odom Jr. In the Serpent’s last clue package there was also a map of the Caribbean which is where Alexander Hamilton was born—Odom was in the Broadway musical, Hamilton. There was also a prescription bottle that said “PharMASKy #31118” which fans have pointed out could reference Odom’s 3 albums, 11 New York shows, and 18 years on Broadway. The baby bottle that Serpent brought this episode could reference “Aaron Burr,” the name of a Got Milk? commercial from 1993. Leslie Odom Jr. played Aaron Burr in Hamilton. The comment Serpent made in this week's clue package about "barely making rent to get by," could also reference Odom's role in Rent.
Crocodile
Courtesy of The Masked Singer
Song: “Toxic” by Britney Spears
Clues: Becoming the Crocodile revived the singer's love for performing, and he hasn’t felt that passionately since he was a kid. When he was young, Crocodile was a “poor nobody with a dream." He remembers standing in his backyard performing to “each weed and rose petal," but even his father didn't believe in his talent. When Crocodile got his first check for $100, he handed it to his father and he cried actual crocodile tears. A few years later, and "shazaam!," his “field of dreams became a field of reality."
Throughout his clue package, fans could catch a glimpse of the following potential clues: a pirate flag, an American flag, the number 5, an anchor, disco ball, hair spray, a photo of the Crocodile’s 2014 family reunion, orange trees, weeds, roses, a television channel that said “30C Rock," and a $100 check.
After his performance, Crocodile revealed his childhood clue as a crocodile pinata filled with little dolphins, that he said had a “porpoise."
Judges’ Guesses: Adam Lambert, Lenny Kravitz, Harry Connick Jr.
The Internet’s Guesses: Neil Patrick Harris, Adam Lambert, Joey Lawrence, Donnie Wahlberg, Lance Bass
My Guess: Nick Carter. From the orange trees to the pirate flag (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), the clue package had several references to Florida, which is where Carter is from. The number 5 in the clue package could reference the five members of the Backstreet Boys, and the dolphin that fell out of the pinata could reference Carter’s charity work related to oceans. He was also appointed UN ambassador of the Year of the Dolphin in 2007. The Year of the Dolphin campaign was aimed at raising awareness of dolphins in the wild, and Carter vowed to protect the marine animal. Carter also has an album called All American which could explain the American flag clue in his video.
Whatchamacallit
Courtesy of The Masked Singer
Song: “Money Maker” by Ludacris (featuring Pharrell Williams)
Clues: Whatchamacallit revealed it takes 36,524 brush strokes to make himself camera-ready. He went through some rough patches to get to where he is. By the time he was at the height of his career, he got a call that shook his world—his mom was in bad shape. He wanted to be by her side, but she wanted him to “continue the ride” and made him realize that her dream was his dream.
Throughout his clue package, fans could catch a glimpse of the following potential clues: green planes, balloons, Disney’s Up references, music notes, marshmallows, a shoe phone, a mirror, and 5 dimes.
After his performance, Whatchamacallit revealed that his childhood clue was a book called Hairy Tales of Whatchama Fam by Doodad Doohickey.
Judges’ Guesses: Cam Newton, Terrell Owens, Armie Hammer
The Internet’s Guesses: Lonzo Ball, Tyler the Creator, Terry Crews, Rashad Jennings, 50 Cent, Kenan Thompson
My Guess: Lonzo Ball. Ball’s mother suffered from a stroke last year, which could be the tragedy Whatchamacallit references. The book Whatchamacallit brought for his childhood clue also had 3 monsters on it, which could depict Ball and his two brothers. In the clue package from Whatchamacallit’s last performance, there was a cuckoo clock with khakis and shrimp. The khakis could represent Chino Hills High School, where Ball played in high school, and the shrimp could reference New Orleans, the team he currently plays for. The first number on the clock was also the number 2, which is Ball’s jersey number. The black panther from the previous clue package could also represent the Carolina Panthers. Ball’s father, LaVar Ball was a practice squad member for the Carolina Panthers in 1995. Whatchamacallit also said Ken Jeong should know who he is, likely because Jeong tends to make a lot of basketball references and guesses. Ball was also drafted by Magic Johnson, which could explain all the magical references from Whatchamacallit’s first clue package.
Seahorse
Courtesy of The Masked Singer
Song: “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion
Clues: Seahorse is a bit tamed in her normal life, but when she steps into her costume, her inner diva comes alive. This isn’t her first rodeo, and as a baby seahorse, she tried to be a hero and make a name for herself. However, it only led to rejection. Seahorse posted in her room for 1,000 years and she’s come a long way since then. Like many people, she experienced unimaginable loss and pain. She wants to tell her fans that no matter how dark the seas get, “we have to keep swimming.”
Throughout the clue package, fans could catch a glimpse of the following potential clues: no smiling sign, “Under the Sea Saloon and Rodeo,” daisy dukes, traffic light, a bull, a clown, a clock with wings that’s set to 9:00, a broken heart with the words “A Dream is a Wish Your <3 Makes.”
Seahorse’s childhood clue was a blue balloon with feathers in it.
Judges’ Guesses: BeBe Rexha, Camila Cabello, Jessica Simpson
The Internet’s Guesses: Tori Kelly, Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, Carrie Underwood
My Guess: Camila Cabello. There were a lot of Disney-related clues in Seahorse's clue package and Cabello will play Cinderella in an upcoming 2021 remake of the film. A video of Cabello and her boyfriend Shawn Mendes making out also circulated around social media. Many fans commented about how she "kissed like a fish," which could reference the no smiling/lips sign in the clue package. The rejection Seahorse talks about could reference Cabello's time on The X Factor where she was originally chosen as an alternate. She ended up convincing the producers to let her audition, but was ultimately rejected as a solo singer later in the show and grouped into the girl group that became "Fifth Harmony."
