Wednesday, May 1 is the last day to submit a return and pay the taxes owed. Virginia Tax officials are encouraging people to file their taxes electronically and set up direct deposit to receive any refunds, which will expedite the process. There also is an automatic six-month filing extension available for those who miss the deadline. However, interest and penalties can accumulate if the tax is not paid in full by the deadline.

Those who qualify for the Virginia Tax Free program also can file their taxes for free. Payments can be made online, by check or money order, or with a credit or debit card.

People who pay their taxes online also are able to track the status of their return or refund online. Virginia Tax has detailed information about the filing and payment process available on its website . If you need help filing your taxes, contact Virginia Tax by calling (804) 367-2486 or using the Where’s My Refund application .
