GREEN BAY, WI – When you’re a lifelong Detroit Lions fan married to a Green Bay Packers fan, you’ve got to go all out when the two teams face off. And that’s just what David Bodine did. Bodine, 35, sported a foam cheese grater-shaped hat at Lambeau Field on Sunday as the Lions beat the Packers 24-14 . Camera operators quickly spotted Bodine’s headwear in the stands, showing him several times on the FOX NFL broadcast. Since the game aired, photos of Bodine in his cheese grater hat have been posted on social media by ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Barstool Sports and more. Bodine told MLive that while he grew up in metro Detroit, he now lives in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula near Houghton. His wife, Sarah Bodine, grew up an hour outside of Green Bay and is a lifelong Packers fan. So while Sarah was sporting her iconic Packers cheesehead hat, her husband had to pull out his cheese grater hat to pair with his Jahmyr Gibbs jersey. “I‘ve had the hat for 10 years, I wear it every time,” Bodine said. “I even wear it at my in-laws’, they’re a bunch of Packers fans.” Bodine said he bought the cheese grater hat online, from a company called Grater Head, which appears to have gone out of business. Despite being in Packers territory, Bodine said the Green Bay fans (and his wife) thought his cheese grater hat was funny. “My wife has a cheesehead and we wear them together every game we go to together,” he told MLive. “She’s a good sport about it. Honestly, the Packers fans think it’s hilarious. They all try to take photos with me.” Though Bodine appeared on the FOX broadcast of the game, he said the Packers never showed him on the screens in the stadium, so he wasn’t aware of his viral moment until his friends started sending him messages. “I made TV and as soon as it happened I had a bunch of friends texting me,” he said. “My phone was blowing up but I was just trying to watch the game. My friends are all giving me crap about it.” A few of his friends sent him links to posts on X (formerly Twitter) asking who the Lions fan with the cheese grater hat was, so Bodine decided to introduce himself. “Respect from this Packers fan,” one X user commented. “Fantastic hat! Congrats on the win today. Hope you had a good time at Lambeau!” Bodine said he’s not sure if he’ll be able to make it to Detroit for the Packers and Lions rematch on Dec. 5, since it’s a nearly nine-hour drive from the U.P. But you can bet he’ll be wearing his cheese grater at home as he watches the Lions hopefully continue their winning streak. “The years of hell are finally paying off,” he said.
