Memorial Day weekend is almost here, bringing the first taste of summer fun.

AAA predicts 1.23 million Virginians will travel 50 miles or more this holiday weekend, mostly by car. That’s about 2.5% higher than last year and amounts to about 30,000 more Virginia travelers this year compared to last.

There are plenty of war memorials and museums to visit, like the Virginia War Memorial or the Virginia Museum of History & Culture , but if you’re looking for more fun and family-friendly options in the Richmond area and beyond, we’ve got you covered.

On Saturday, thrill seekers can take a ride on the newly remastered Big Bad Wolf coaster at Busch Gardens. Admission to Soak City is included with tickets to the main park. Kings Dominion is open Friday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Monday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Soak City is open noon to 7 p.m. Saturday through Monday. Both are located at 16000 Theme Park Way, Doswell.

Take a hike



If you want to get outdoors this Memorial Day, there are great hiking opportunities near and far.

The James River Park System offers trails of varying difficulty levels on both sides of the river, including the popular North Bank and Buttermilk loop. Pocahontas State Park, located in the center of Chesterfield County, has more than 60 miles of trails conducive to hiking and biking.

Hikers seeking a challenge can head out to the Blue Ridge Mountains area near Charlottesville and Waynesboro. Old Rag Mountain in Shenandoah National Park is an iconic nine-mile hike with some areas of challenging terrain. Other popular hiking options in the area include Humpback Rock, Crabtree Falls and Sugar Hollow, which leads hikers to the Blue Hole swimming area.

Frida: Beyond the Myth



If you haven’t been yet, Memorial Day weekend is the perfect time to check out the new temporary exhibit “Frida: Beyond the Myth” at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. This exhibit features more than 60 works of art, many rarely seen outside of Mexico, including self-portraits, still lifes, and compositions from her imagination. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. $20. 200 N.
